What Are Qualified Jobs Under the Express Entry System?

When applying for permanent residency in Canada through the Express Entry system, having a qualified job offer is still very important — but not exactly in the way many people think.

Today, a job offer does not give you extra CRS points automatically.
However, it can still help you become eligible to apply under some Express Entry streams, like Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) or Federal Skilled Trades (FST) programs.
Also, many Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) still prefer or require a valid job offer!

Let’s break it down clearly:

What is a Qualified Job Offer?

In the Express Entry system, a qualified job offer usually means:

  • Full-time, paid, non-seasonal employment (minimum 30 hours per week)

  • From a Canadian employer

  • For at least one year after becoming a permanent resident

  • In a skilled occupation (TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 under the NOC system)

Why Is a Qualified Job Offer Still Important?

Even if it doesn’t directly boost your CRS points now, a valid job offer can:

  • Help you meet eligibility requirements for Federal programs

  • Strengthen your Express Entry profile

  • Make you a stronger candidate for Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)

  • Help you get a work permit faster while waiting for PR

Many provinces also prefer applicants who already have jobs lined up — it shows you are ready to settle and succeed!

Common Examples of Qualified Jobs

Here are examples of jobs that are considered qualified:

  • Software Developer (TEER 1)

  • Registered Nurse (TEER 1)

  • Electrician (TEER 2)

  • Carpenter (TEER 3)

  • Restaurant Manager (TEER 0)

Remember: jobs must fall in TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 to be considered skilled!
